It’s 3 am in the morning and you are awake in your bed for hours in the dark with thoughts of temptations, pornography, discouragement, anxiety, fear, depression, suicidial thoughts, and thinking about every possible thing we have failed at in our lives. Our mind is good at replaying negative things that our heart cannot delete.
What do you do? Let’s first look at what took place with Jesus in Gethsemane before He was arrested and put to death – Mark 14:34 says, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death …” Never before did we see Jesus so emotionally distraught. But, in His height of becoming emotionally distraught… His prayer life was in full force to combat the deep sorrow He was facing.
What is prayer? Prayer is simply talking to God telling Him whatever concerns you. It’s easy to talk to someone when you know they love you unconditionally, and God loves us without conditions. God never condemns or judges us based on our thoughts or actions. He’s a loving God that understands the strategy of our enemy. Prayer is admitting that we need God to intervene in those things that creates anxiety in our lives, and letting Him know that we are totally depending on Him to move into those areas that keep us in deep sorrow.
So what should we do when we are troubled and tormented by those awful negative thoughts at 3 am in the morning? You only have three choices in life: Give up, Give in, or Give it to Jesus.
No matter how things look like right now – know that God is still in control of our life. He always has the last word in all our lives whether we are sinners or saints. Choose to tell it all to Jesus and stay in peace. Faith is a choice to trust God to take control of our thoughts that cripple us while we lie in bed. Faith tells us that no matter what lies ahead of us, God is already waiting for us at the intersections. Where our strength runs out, God’s strength begins…that’s why we need our Friend Jesus Christ who has a higher power that is fully activated when we call on Him. He can destroy anything that violates our sanity and peace.
When life gets you down – you should pray. God is already working on those things that concerns us… because He is confident that we will be bringing it to Him in prayer. It doesn’t matter how simple our prayers are …the power of our prayers is always in The One who hears it.
