There are situations in Life that leaves us with only two (2) options:
- Hold your head up, walk brave and keep your eyes on Jesus
- Hide in fear and live a life of torment
Today, I’m going to talk on Discouragement.
It’s the greatest of all evil that I can imagine. To me, if you get hurt, sick, or any of the other evil stuff we daily live with – history shows we can recover from them.
But if you are living with a SPIRIT of discouragement …it has the power to quickly escalate your Discouragement to Depression.
Discouragement happens to everyone including the strongest people in the village. Discouragement is not easily diagnosed until it leaves you feeling physically weak, vulnerable and overwhelmed.
Admitting when you feel discouraged is the first step to actively doing something positive about it.
As Christians we have the awesome privilege of detecting negative thoughts based on the Word of God….while others who are less fortunate – soak themselves deeper into the misery with no hope of surviving the awful state of mind.
When Elijah became discouraged – God provided ravens to feed him. Elijah simply needed REST.
Lesson 101: Pause. Rest. Refresh.
Our THOUGHTS play a huge role in recovering from discouragement.
God’s Word gives us good counsel:
“Casting down IMAGINATIONS,
and every HIGH THING that EXALTETH itself AGAINST the knowledge of GOD,
and BRINGING into captivity every thought to the OBEDIENCE of Christ;”
2 Corinthians 10:5 KJV
Our circumstances may NOT change …BUT our thoughts must be held captive and force them to become obedient to what God’s Word says.
“You, Lord, give true peace.
You give peace to those who depend on you.
You give peace to those who trust you.
So, trust the Lord always.
Trust the Lord because he is our Rock forever.”
Isaiah 26:3-4 ICB
The stuff we go through here on earth is TEMPORAL – definitely not worth the sweat. Feelings change. Priorities change. Seasons change. Perspectives change. Life changes. These are all temporal stuff.
“GOD is good, a hiding place in tough times.
He recognizes and welcomes anyone looking for help,
No matter how desperate the trouble.
But cozy islands of escape He wipes right off the map.
No one gets away from God.
Why waste time conniving against GOD?”
Nahum 1:7-10 MSG
We are not made to last forever. We all have an expiry date set by God.
The stuff we are discouraged about today will not get past our caskets. Five years from today – it will be totally irrelevant.
So stay on high alert and watch out for the ONLY TRUE ENEMY …the roaring lion who walks about looking for someone to discourage and to eat up our happiness.
The truth is – We DO HAVE LOTS MORE to thank God for than the top five things that makes us become discouraged
- Painful memories
- Fear of rejection
