Psalms 90:12 says, ‘So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.’ Life is shorter than we think. One day we are here … the next day we are gone. Birthdays always comes with great excitement, big plans, and heartfelt wishes from far and near. The overlooked reality is, our birthdays are numbered by God and not by us.
Most folks do not like to talk about death … but the truth is no one can avoid that appointment. We are not entitled to any of life’s privileges tomorrow. We sometimes put off an apology for another time that may never come. We sometimes delay making an important decision for any day besides today. We more often than not decide to think about death only when we are faced with death.
The things we take for granted today … may one day be too late to show our appreciation. The kindness of a stranger, the love and sacrifices of your parents, the water in the tap, the air we breathe … many of us know exactly what we have is what someone else is praying for … BUT … WE JUST NEVER THINK WE COULD LOSE IT.
So teach us LORD to apply wisdom to every day we are kept alive!
A little girl was holding two apples with both hands. Her mum came in and softly asked her little daughter with a smile ‘My sweetie, could you give your mum one of your two apples?’ The girl looked up at her mum for some seconds, then she suddenly took a quick bite on one apple, and then quickly on the other. The mum felt the smile on her face freeze. She tried hard not to reveal her disappointment. Then the little girl handed one of her bitten apples to her mum, and said, ‘Mummy, here you are. This is the sweeter one.’
Those who like to pay the bill, do so NOT because they are loaded but because they have responsibilities and their integrity matters.
Those who choose to stay in touch with you … do so NOT because they are stupid but because they care about you.
Those who apologize first after a fight, do so NOT because they are wrong but because they value friendship. They are not irrational … they know life is short.
Those who are willing to help you, do so NOT because they owe you any thing but because they see you as a fellow human being.
Those who often text you, do so NOT because they have nothing better to do but because you are in their heart.
Those who take out time to chat with you, doesn’t mean they are jobless or less busy, but they know the importance of friendship.
One day, all of us will get separated from each other … we will miss those conversations we used to have of everything and nothing. The dreams that we shared will one day only be a memory. Before long the days will pass by … it will be months and years before we realize that our lack of appreciation pushed the real love away.
One day we look back at the pictures, the cards, the kindness of others and say , ‘IT WAS THEM THAT I HAD THE BEST DAYS OF MY LIFE WITH’.
Dear LORD,
Teach us how short our lives are so that we can become wise. In Jesus Name, Amen
